The Project collects unwanted good quality furniture, electrical goods, and bric-a-brac for re-distribution to people on benefit. The Project operates in the Borough of Melton Mowbray. This covers an area extending to Bottesford to the North, Buckminster to the East, Somerby to the South, and Thrussington to the West and all villages in-between. Oakham and Rutland areas are also covered.

The Council has improved many of its pre-war properties. Tenants involved are consulted and kept informed of the programme of works. The works currently being carried out are re-roofing, UPVC double glazing installation, improved heating and security.

People on the Housing Register, who need more suitable housing for medical reasons, may be given priority for suitable Council housing depending on the assessment given to their application by an independent medical advisor.

The Council has approximately 1900 dwellings comprising houses, flats, bungalows and maisonettes, which are available for rent. Because demand is higher than the vacancy rate, applicants will not necessarily be housed immediately.

The Council supports Registered Social Landords' (Housing Associations) activity within the Borough either by means of loans and grants or by enabling the transfer of land with residential development potential.

The Council also has arrangements with a number of Registered Social Landlords (Housing Associations) whereby applicants can be nominated for vacancies either for rent or on a shared ownership basis.
