e-Europe Awards November 2005. CareOnLine was one of 52 finalists selected from 21 countries. Our category was defined as “putting citizens at the centre through transformation and innovation in services, delivering real benefits for users”. Cabinet Office e-government Minster Jim Murphy showed a keen interest in the CareOnLine presentation.

Current Status. Our main project for 2005/06 is installing Touch Screen computers in Social Care day centres and older people’s homes to provide service users with access to the Internet. Trials have shown that both staff and users find the information valuable; Staff are developing stimulating new activities for users.

Pictured at Millfield Day Centre in Hinckley is Patricia Porter, learning to improve her dexterity and mental skills with the help of Senior Carer Alan Dennis. A DVD has been made to assist staff to understand the role of CareOnLine and the benefits that service users can gain.

To-date we have installed 100 computers in people’s homes and 60 computers in shared locations, trained 300 people in their own homes and given 2500 people the chance to experience using the Internet.

Training and Support.  CareOnLine works with isolated individuals and groups to help them understand how they can benefit from learning modern ICT skills. We are constantly amazed by the achievements of people who have improved their lives substantially with these skills. You can see some of our case studies on CareOnLine within the ‘CareOnLine People’ category on the homepage.

Web Service. CareOnLine provides access to over 3000 Local support and activity groups across Leicestershire. These entries have been specially selected for older people, disabled people and carers and displayed by district and town. Other new categories include ‘Insurance for Older and Disabled People’, ‘Disabled Holidays’ and ‘Older People’s Holidays’.
