Leicestershire Adult Social Care Services have circulated information and advice about actions that older people and their carers can take to keep well during winter.

There is also a Winter Contact Card for people to write down the telephone numbers of people they would need to contact in an emergency such as the plumber or heating engineer, the local GP, the chemist or the local shopkeeper.

The best time to have a flu jab is between late September and early November, ready for winter.  If you are 65 or over or have certain medical conditions, visit your doctor for a flu jab.  For more information you can read the frequently asked questions about flu on the Department of Health website.

Age Concerns Fight the Freeze campaign provides advice and information for older people on how to keep safe and warm during winter months, help with reducing heating expenses, Insulation grants, free electric blanket testing and much more.

Age Concern and Powergen will be working together to offer a cold weather payment for gas customers aged 60 or over.  Plus additional benefits such as no standing charge - only pay for what you use, free years supply of carbon monoxide detectors, etc.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (S A D) is a type of winter depression.  The S A D Association is a voluntary organisation which informs the public and health professions about S A D and supports and advises sufferers of the illness.  For an information pack you can write to:

This scheme is designed for the over 60s.  The scheme allows you to pay a fixed monthly Direct Debit for 12 months for your gas and electricity.  The amount you pay is based on the number of people who live in your home and the number of bedrooms it has.
